The Hyack Swim Club had a blistering swim meet at the BC Provincial Championships in Saanich, Victoria on the first weekend of March. Coming home with 40 medals, of which 14 were Gold, Hyack swimmers have a reason to come home smiling. Leading the Hyack charge were 3 swimmers that swam exceptionally well.
Roman Bajevs, 13, got to stand on the podium 7 times and was first in BC no less than twice. Roman made it into finals and achieved personal best times in all the events that he swam.
Vanessa Hanbury, 17, also came home with 2 Golds, 3 Silvers, and 2 Bronzes. She raced hard and broke the previous Hyack record for the 200m Individual Medley which has been on the record board since 2000. In her 800m Freestyle, she was won Gold and was the fastest for all age groups.
Lily Kanamori, 11, swam very tough and had some very impressive performances. She not only made finals in all her events, she also earned 3 Golds, 1 Silver, and 3 Bronzes. Some of Lily’s swims qualified for Age Group Nationals, a level that required a lot of training to get there.
Daniel Gomez, Stefan Milosevic, Andreas Mock, and Adam Godkin are also now part of the elite few that have qualified for Age Group Nationals. These swimmers will be able to attend the highly competitive Age Group National meet in Calgary at the end of July. The tremendous achievements of these young swimmers not only reflect the success of the Hyack Swim Club but it also shows the growing interest in competitive swimming from the kids in this area.
Congratulations to the entire Hyack Provincial team for all their hard work!
