Olympic Trials - Day 5 Prelims

Coach Mark Bottrill's blog:

The meet started an hour earlier today, so we have had to make some adjustments in our routine. Yesterday the hot shower routine took a hit as there was no hot water, but thankfully it was ok today.

100 Free was first up and Kathy Qu’s best time streak came to an end. A bit slow off the start into the first 25 and had to play catchup the whole race. As per usual with Kathy in the past few meets, she comes on b at the end (a testament to her fitness) but this time would be short of a best time. This swim concludes her Trials, which by any standards has been a great success for a first time National qualifier.

Vanessa Hanbury was up next, who looked great in warmup and poised to go. In the race, never really got on her stroke and scrambled to a 59.60.

100 Fly up next and Drew Christensen looked easy in a great swim just off his best time. Should be good to go tonight.

Mike Cai up next and swam to a best time of 59.68. Then Andre Kudaba pulled the fastest heat next to one of this chief rivals in Jonathan Blouin and raced head to head with him, to a tie. Unfortunately for both of them it was a really crowded field in the sub 56.55 category with a ton of swims 10th and 100ths apart. Andre finished tied for 20th.

So Drew up again tonight, and one day to go with some good events still ahead.

Olympic Trials is a long meet, even though you may only have single swims per day you must stay focused for the duration of the meet. There have been plenty of high caliber upsets of perennial favourites through the meet. Our club has fared well and had steady results so far. In this environment the finer points become extremely important as many swimmers can lie within .5 of each other all owning a mistake on a turn or start or an extra breath.
